SELA to hold virtual seminar on the port experience in the Caribbean

With the objective of building awareness and capacity to effectively use Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) as a tool for port management efficiency, the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA) and the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), in collaboration with the Network of Digital and Collaborative Ports and the Port Management Association of the Caribbean (PMAC), are organizing the Virtual Seminar on the Port Experience in the Caribbean to be held on 25-26 October 2021.

The webinar will highlight examples of best practices and innovative procedures used by Port Authorities in the region to manage ports and facilitate trade. This event will provide a platform for dialogue and a space to share ideas, lessons learned and experiences that will improve the port environment in the region and promote regional integration.

Maritime transport is fundamental to Caribbean trade, and therefore, one of the main objectives of port operations is to improve operational management and efficiency within the region.

The pandemic highlighted the urgent need to modernise, digitise and innovate in maritime-port processes and activities. The closure of supply chains and recurring bottlenecks in ports demonstrate the shortcomings in the sector, making it a challenge to keep cargo moving quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively, at lower costs and in the shortest time.

The health and economic crisis caused by the pandemic has also increased the level of interest in PPPs, specifically those related to infrastructure and transport services. The challenge is to generate the economic, financial, technical and regulatory conditions to sustain these partnerships, collaboration and cooperation between sectors.

Global trends and the need for a robust and innovative transport system require significant capital-intensive investment. In this regard, PPPs represent potential mechanisms to support port development in the region.
