Caracas, 11 September 2012.- The headquarters of the Permanent Secretariat of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA) will be the venue for the global launch, on 12 September 2012, of the “Trade and Development Report 2012. Policies for inclusive and balanced growth,” prepared by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), based in Geneva, Switzerland.

Participants in this event will include Ambassador José Rivera Banuet, Permanent Secretary of SELA, and Dr. Alfredo Calcagno, representative of the Secretary-General of UNCTAD, who will present the Report, to be released simultaneously in different regions of the world by other United Nations officials.

UNCTAD’s report, which has been published on an annual basis since 1981 and presented at the headquarters of the Permanent Secretariat of SELA in recent years, analyzes current economic trends and major political issues at the international level.

Diplomatic representations in Venezuela, international organizations accredited to the country, higher education institutions, civil society organizations and the media are part of the audience invited to the presentation of this global report.

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development was established in 1964 as an organ of the United Nations General Assembly to deal with matters related to trade, investment and development. The objectives of the organization are to maximize trade, investment and development opportunities in developing countries as well as to assist them in their efforts to integrate into the global economy.

The joint work between the Permanent Secretariat of SELA and the General Secretariat of UNCTAD has been characterized by the organization of a wide range of activities in the field of economic development, trade, investment, information technologies, competition and consumer protection, among others, which have benefited the Latin American and Caribbean region.
