SELA co-sponsors Seminar on LAC-EU relations within the frameworkof the Lima Summit

Caracas, 9 May 2008.- The Permanent Secretariat of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA) and the Peruvian edition of Le Monde Diplomatique are organizing the Seminar “LAC-EU Relations. Analysis and Prospects", scheduled to be held on Wednesday 14 May, in the “Lumiere” Conference Room of the French Alliance, in Miraflores, Lima, Peru, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

The seminar – to be held within the framework of the V Summit of Heads of State and Government of Latin America and the Caribbean and the EU – will be attended by renowned diplomatic and academic personalities of Peru, as well as international guests.

During the event, SELA will submit its e-book “Latin America and the Caribbean -European Union Relations: Analysis and Prospects” (in CD format), which includes the documents prepared by the Permanent Secretariat of SELA between 2006 and 2008 on bi-regional relations, as well as the conclusions and recommendations adopted by the Member States of the organizations in the meetings held during this period, which discussed the most important trends in the economic relations between Latin America and the Caribbean and the European Union, as well as the results of the LAC-EU Summits.

It is worth noting that the Permanent Secretariat of SELA has collaborated with the Peruvian authorities in the preparation of several documents related to the Summit, and has held three meetings in its headquarters on the relations between Latin America and the Caribbean and the European Union. Participants in these meetings have made a series of proposals to move ahead towards the adoption of common positions in the Latin American and Caribbean region in order to strengthen its capacity for dialogue with the European bloc.


During the opening session of the seminar, speeches will be delivered by Ambassador José Rivera Banuet, Permanent Secretary of SELA, and Ambassador Harold Forsyth, current Director of the Peruvian edition of Le Monde Diplomatique.

In addition to Ambassador Rivera Banuet, speakers will include the Director of Relations for Integration and Cooperation of the Permanent Secretariat, Dr. Antonio Romero, Dr. Carlos Quenan, professor of the Institut des Hautes Etudes D’Amerique Latine of the Sorbone University and Consultant of SELA, Dr. Juan Jose Ruda, Director of the Institute of International Studies (IDEI) of the Pontífica Universidad Católica of Peru, Ambassador Luis Chuquihuara, Executive Director of the Peruvian Forum on International Relations (FOPRI), and a Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru.

The Permanent Secretariat of SELA and the Peruvian edition of Le Monde Diplomátique are pleased to invite all the guests who are interested in the issue of LAC-EU relations to take part in this important event.
