Background

Among SELA’s fundamental purposes are the promotion of a consultation and coordination system for the adoption of common positions and strategies of Latin America and the Caribbean on economic and social issues, as well as the support for the region’s integration processes for encouraging its articulation and convergence.

In this connection, the Permanent Secretariat of SELA has carried out several analytical efforts relating to the institutional architecture for integration processes during past years.

Considering that the design and construction of an adequate institutional structure for integration are closely linked to the level of consolidation for the efforts of integration efforts, the Member States of SELA agreed that it would be convenient to continue analyzing these items and, therefore, approved in the Work Programme for year 2007, the holding of a regional meeting on the institutionalization of integration in Latin America and the Caribbean.
