Justification

Throughout the years at SELA, the Meetings of International Cooperation Directors for Latin America and the Caribbean have become a permanent forum for the exchange of ideas and successful experiences among national focal points in charge of cooperation in its 26 Member States. These meetings represent an instrument to promote consultation and coordination of common positions as regards various issues, where it is necessary to gain support.

In its capacity as a regional focal point for cooperation, the Permanent Secretariat of SELA, organizes these annual meetings of International Cooperation Directors in order to encourage their active participation, as well as socialization of information. Similarly, these meetings serve to progressively strengthen and deepen South-South Cooperation by convening extra-regional counterparts from Asia and Africa as well.

Objectives

In compliance with its mandate as a forum for consultation and coordination, SELA expects to provide a space for national officials in charge of cooperation in its Member States to further tighten existing relations, as well as opportunities for them to exchange initiatives and successful experiences to help them to make creative and efficient contributions to the economic and social development agenda in the region; and thus, to apply criteria to encourage usefulness and consistency between international cooperation with the needs of the region’s countries.

For the XVIII Meeting of International Cooperation Directors for Latin America and the Caribbean, the central topic will be Cooperation for countries with a high degree of vulnerability to natural disasters, in view of its relevance.

In order to make strides in dealing with this important topic for Latin America and the Caribbean, the meeting envisages presentations by experts of specialized agencies regarding the subject who will provide information, data and an updated analysis on those countries with high degree of vulnerability to natural disasters, as well as the necessary regional strategies to reach consensuses on joint work plans.
