La Paz, January 7- The president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, confirmed that he will be travelling on today to New York for the country’s pro-tempore chairmanship nomination of the Group of 77 (G-77), bloc of 133 developing countries and China. “Tomorrow (today) I shall take on the responsibility of presiding the G-77,” said Morales in La Paz, capital city of Bolivia, during a meeting with Bolivian ambassadors and consuls.

Bolivia was chosen to lead the bloc last November, a decision supported by China. Evo Morales has announced that he will “work hard” chairing the G-77, and that he plans to establish a “new agenda for the humanity and dignity of the inhabitants of the world.” Morales stated that he plans to host a bloc summit in Bolivia this year.

Created in 1964, the group that represents developing countries is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Originally there were 77 founding nations. Today, there are 133 participating countries, which represents two thirds of the members of the United Nations (UN) and about 60% of the world population.

Every year, chancellors of the G-77 meet in New York. Bolivia shall receive the presidency from Algeria, which headed the group in 2013.
