SELA: Meeting of International Cooperation Directors to address strategies to improve humanitarian aid programmes vis-à-vis natural disasters

The Permanent Secretariat of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA), jointly with the government of Panama, the World Food Programme (WFP) and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UN/ISDR), will hold the “XXX Meeting of International Cooperation Directors for Latin America and the Caribbean: Coordination and efficiency of international cooperation against the threat of natural disaster risk”, on 11 and 12 April in Panama City.

In Latin America and the Caribbean there are institutions dedicated to emergency care, risk management and disaster prevention. The countries of the region have gained experience as regards policies and programmes to address such situations. However, it is necessary to give greater impetus to coordination, articulation and convergence efforts so as to ensure the effectiveness of the actions against the damages and impacts caused by natural phenomena.

The meeting will help International Cooperation Directors to know the potentials for assistance offered by the Regional Logistics Centre of Humanitarian Assistance (CERAH) of Panama. It will also allow for the exchange of experiences, the creation of a team of public and private partners who identify new proposals and mechanisms for the design and implementation of prevention, mitigation, response, recovery and reconstruction programmes, as well as the signing of interinstitutional agreements in the field of disaster risk reduction.
